What is RAM and how it differ from ROM

Different between RAM & ROM

RAM, which stands for random access memory, and ROM, which stands for read-only memory, are both present in your computer. RAM is volatile memory that temporarily stores the files you are working on. ROM is a non-volatile memory that permanently stores instructions for your computer.

Different between RAM & ROM

Whether you use a computer, mobile phone, or laptop, then you must have come across words like RAM and ROM. While buying a phone or laptop, we see how much RAM or ROM this phone has. But do you know what is RAM or ROM?

RAM or ROM is part of the motherboard. Both these parts are connected by memory. The function of both is to store memory. The full form of RAM is Random Access Memory, while the full name of ROM is Read-Only Memory. Although the work of both parts is related to memory, there is a large difference between them.

What are the Differences between Ram and Rom?

To know the difference between RAM and ROM, first of all, we have to understand what is RAM and ROM and what are their functions. Following is the meaning, function of RAM and ROM.

What is RAM, how it works?

What is RAM

RAM in full form is called Randomly Access Memory. This memory is short-time memory. This memory is only used as long as your device is turned on.

Once restarted or refreshed, all the data in this memory is lost and it starts accepting new data. The function of this type of memory is to hold the data for a short time. RAM is directly attached to the motherboard and is part of the motherboard.

What is ROM, how it works?

What is ROM, how it works

The ROM running on the computer is called a hard disk and the ROM running on the mobile phone is called memory. The job of ROM is to save the data permanently. Once the data is saved in the ROM, it does not get lost even after refreshing and restarting. Pendrives, memory cards and hard disks are examples of ROMs.

What is the difference between ROM and RAM?

After knowing the meaning of RAM and ROM, it is quite easy to differentiate between these two. Following is the difference between RAM and ROM:-

RAM - RAM is short-time memory, whereas ROM ROM is full time i.e. permanent memory.

The data in RAM is there only for a short time or until the device is refreshed or restarted, whereas the data in ROM remains there until it is deleted at will.

If you use a laptop, then you must have found that the average RAM of ROM is many times more. This means that the RAM requirement is always less and the ROM requirement is relatively higher.

Both RAM and ROM are parts of the motherboard but without RAM the motherboard cannot function, but having ROM is not essential for the motherboard to function. That is, ROM does not matter as much to any device as RAM.

RAM is relatively faster than ROM (RAM-ROM), ROM is much more sluggish. The reason for this is also that RAM saves only one image of any data, while ROM copies the data completely.

Different Types of RAM

RAM is divided into two parts based on its structure. Those parts are as follows:-

  • STATIC RAM
  • DYNAMIC RAM

STATIC RAM (S RAM)

Static RAM

S RAM memory is the memory whose data can be saved only when the power is on. This memory is volatile. Address decoder handles this memory.

This means that this memory works on the word line, which is divided into different latches. The data in memory goes in the form of binary code i.e. 1,0,1,0.

S RAM is more expensive than other RAM. The direct reason for this is that it works on the latest system, and that is why it is also used by more people.

DYNAMIC RAM (DRAM)

DYNAMIC RAM

D RAM is much more sluggish and cheaper and RAM as compared to other RAM. Only one transistor and only one capacitor are used inside this RAM. Whatever data is saved inside it is saved in the form of current, due to this, it takes more energy because continuous recharge is its first need.

Types of DRAM

There are mainly five types of D Rome:-

  • Asynchronous DRAM (ADRAM)
  • Synchronous DRAM – SDRAM
  • Double Data Rate SDRAM – DDR SDRAM
  • Rambus DRAM (RDRAM)
  • Cache DRAM – CDRAM

Different Types of ROM

ROM i.e. Read Only Memory is divided into three parts according to its structure, manufacturing, and erasing data. Those parts are the following…

  • PROM
  • EPROM
  • EEPROM

PROM

The full form of PROM is Programmable Read-Only Memory. PiROM is quite different from other types of ROM as it will require a PEROM programmer to write any kind of data on it. (RAM and ROM)

It is not possible for PROM to write any data without this device. The direct difference between ROM and other types of ROM is that PROM is blank, that is, it is not programmed, whereas other types of ROM are programmed while creating.

EPROM

The full form of EPROM is Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory. EPROM is a special type of memory that stores its data until it is exposed to ultraviolet rays.

It is considered one of the safest types of ROM. It can be made capable of reprogramming only by ultraviolet rays. This can only be done with the help of a special kind of device, which is called a pirom programmer or pirom burner.

Double EP ROM ( EEPROM )

The full form of Double EP ROM is Electricity Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory. EPROM differs from other ROMs because it can be reprogrammed only with the help of electricity. Like all other types of ROM, it is also not as fast as ROM.

FAQ sections

How much RAM do I need?

16GB of RAM is the best place to start for a gaming PC. Although 8GB was enough for many years, new AAA PC games like Cyberpunk 2077 have an 8GB of RAM requirement, though up to 16GB is recommended. Few games, even the latest ones, will actually take advantage of a full 16GB of RAM

Is ROM internal storage?

The ROM or read-only memory forms a part of your internal storage and that part is not Accessible for users to write on and is thus referred to as Read-Only Memory. The rest of your internal storage is where you store Apps and can store media files and other documents.

What's more important RAM or processor?

RAM is essentially the core of any computer or smartphone and in most cases, more is always better. RAM is as significant as the processor. The right amount of RAM on your smartphone or computer optimizes performance and the ability to support various types of software

What makes a computer run faster RAM or processor?

Generally, the faster the RAM, the faster the processing speed. With faster RAM, you increase the speed at which memory transfers information to other components. Meaning, your fast processor now has an equally fast way of talking to the other components, making your computer much more efficient

Does RAM increase FPS?

And, the answer to that is: in some scenarios and depending on how much RAM you have, yes, adding more RAM could increase your FPS. ... On the flip side, if you have a low amount of memory (say, 4GB-8GB), adding more RAM will increase your FPS in games that utilize more RAM than you previously had.
